Poker and High Stakes Games, as we see today have a history of no more than four decades. Before 1970s, poker was played in small community places and joints and for two reasons – quick money and leisure. After 1970s many things changed and the game got more acceptance and the players more appreciation for their skills. Today, in terms of format and rules of the game, it has moved closer to many other sports. The esteemed title, Poker Champion, grabs more attention than the premise – to earn quick money.
There are different, legends to the poker game, as to how the championship started. People say, that according to the first story, each player voted for himself, and if the vote was a tie, the second best player was asked to vote, and then there was clash of the titans, until a winner was declared. That was how a champion was born, and was awarded with appreciation and a grand prize. Thus, Johnny Moss was declared the ultimate champion. He became famous by the name, “The Grand Old Man Of Poker”.
In the year, 1971, NL Holdem tournament, was held, and finally a battle of poker was held, between, Puggy Pearson, and Johnny Moss was held, and finally Johnny moss won the championship again. He won a grand prize of thirty thousand dollars and the world champion’s trophy.
Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston, won the “poker superstar”, title, in the year 1972. According to stories, people said that, a big deal was made, between, Puggy Pearson, Doyle Brunson and Preston was made, where Pearson and Brunson would play in such a way, that Preston would win, sure shot. It meant that both of them would be in the back drop and Preston would get all the cash money, of eighty thousand dollars, and would share it the world champion title. And the money would be divided into three equal shares.
Then as the scroll of history changed its pages, , in the year 1973, Walter Puggy Pearson, won three champion tournaments, and thus, developed a mark in the style in which he played in the world poker champion’s trophy. Johnny Moss, experienced complete blowout, and 1971 and 1972, were completely the years of drought for him. He was a victim of continuous defeat, he lost hope.
After losing so much hope, one could never imagine that Johnny Moss would get up, after losing completely, he added third feather in his cap, by winning in the year 1974. He won against Crandall Addington, whom people thought no one could defeat. As the years passed by , Johnny Moss, proved himself, and won a cash prize of one lakh and sixty thousand dollars, but he was unstoppable, in making poker winning a history, he won five more times in fifteen years, which is quite a lot. He won his last champion title in the year 1988, when he was eighty one years of age.
