Raise And Call In Poker: Make A Wise Decision
Feb 23, 2012 About Poker Poker Game

In poker a player makes a call to match with the previous bet or the previous raise that any other player has already made. One who bets in poker can make a player win in two ways but a caller has just one way to win that is by displaying a strong hand.
Generally different situations in the game of poker command different names given to the trick of calling.
When a caller is termed to go to a crying call, it means that his call has very low expectation of winning the game. The caller can make such a call when he is unsure of the strength of the hand but has a desire to remain in the game for playing in the next round as well.
An over-call by a caller is made after another player has made a call. If a caller wants to win by going for an over-call he can do so by only defeating the hands of all the other players who made a call before him. This means that the caller needs to have a very strong hand; the caller should have a hand stronger than the other opponents. In such a situation a caller just cannot do with having a hand that beats the original bettor. An over-call is very easy to perform in a game which involves a large number of players.
When a caller is faced with more than one bet in one single round he goes for a cold calling. There is another form of calling that a caller can make and it is called a smooth call. This is a type of call that a caller makes when he has a strong hand but does not want to go for a raise. The player becomes a smooth caller so as to take the game at a slow pace.
Being a caller has been however not always a good idea. If you have a good hand and go for calling instead of raising there is a chance that when a draw is hit it will become an easy task to spot it. There are two primary reasons why a player should not be a caller always and also raise at times. One is the fact that when a caller goes for calling it indicates his weakness. Calling again and again will put the caller into trouble most of the time. If a caller believes that his hand is not a strong hand and should not be raised, then he should also remember that the hand should not be played at all in the first place.
Being a caller also brings another flaw with it and that is all the good players will drive you out of the pots with their bets. And in this way a caller easily loses a pot that should have been his simply because he went for a preflop.
By being a raiser on the other hand you can be dominant in the game and your opponents will take you seriously. The game of poker is a mind game and a good player can decide well whether he wants to become a raiser or a caller when a situation demands a decision.
