It is believed by most historians that history of poker can be traced back to a longer time than that. Hence there are different stories associated with these cards.
To begin with poker cards were painted by manual work and due to the fact that they were expensive many people could not afford them. However when printing started, the prices dropped and many people could now afford to buy them.
The cards were initially used to predict the future. Later on different kinds of card and card games came into being. Usually two versions on character are there and number meanings on cards. In different countries images are different.
One version: In this version-
The Diamond stands for businessmen
The Spade for soldiers
The Heart for clergymen
The Club for farmers
Many people were strongly against the monarchy in French revolution and needed replacement of the King and Queen images on cards by other characters. However people had already become familiar to the original card design and no changes were desired by them and hence this suggestion vanished in the river of history.
Second version: As per this version poker cards are made in accordance to the calendar principles. In one deck of cards there are two jokers, one stands for the sun and the other for the moon. With the exception of these two cards, the rest 52 cards represent 52 weeks in a year. In this version-
The Heart stands for spring
The Diamond for summer
The Club for autumn
The Spade for winter
13 cards are included in each symbolizing 13 weeks in every season. As for numbers go-
“J” stands for eleven
“Q” for twelve
“K” for thirteen
Points of 54 cards are added up to 365. This means 365 days in a year.
